DBQ Essay

During the late 19th and twentieth centuries European imperialism resulted in the carving up of areas of Africa, and Asia into vast colonial empires. This was the case for British colonialism in India. As the imperialism "virus" , the colony and colonizer viewed imperialism differently. For both of the there was positive and negative effects of imperialism. So the British had some positive effects as well as negative effects. This was the same with the Indian people.

The British had positive effects due to imperialism in India. British had gained their land(India). They had become richer. Due to this made their empire bigger. They had gained industrial goods from India(DOC. 6).

The British also had negative effects due to imperialism in India. There was a lot of rebellion. Many people like Ganghi rebelled against the British government. Although the protest were peaceful many of the British diploid soldiers to get the Indian people in order to keep India imperialism.

The Indians had positive effects due to imperialism. The British developed roads, canals, railways, and telegraphs. The British also established schools and newspapers. All together gave them civilization.(All in red Doc. 1). As Dadabbhai Naoroji in a speech said that this was all a great blessing; political peace and there was order in India(Doc. 2). In an excerpt from The Economic History Of India Under Early British Rule, states that they the British had gave them peace, western education and modern life(Doc. 3). Also the British had gave them bridges, railways, and miles of paved roads; they had improved sanitation and higher standard of living(Doc. 4). There was also no more infanticide and slavery (doc. 5).

The Indians had negative effects due to imperialism. The Indians had no high government place; all the British had the higher places in the government (doc. 2). although the Indians produced a lot they got nothing back (doc. 6). Because of industrial sellings all local people ran out of business. Poverty grew and the standard of living fell to terribly low levels(Doc. 6). The Indians had no say in the government(Doc. 7)

British imperialism had many effects on themselves and the Indian people. they were positive and negative. Although the Indians got a lot of things they had not got anything back. They were treated like garbage. As for the British they had got what they wanted but there was to much rebellion. In the end India had gotten their freedom and had an alliance with the British.
